Voice Box Cancer Surgery Specialist in Ahmedabad
Voice box cancer treatment in Ahmedabad that puts your voice first.
Cancer of the voice box, or larynx, most often announces itself as hoarseness that will not go away. Caught early, it is one of the most curable head and neck cancers and can frequently be treated with transoral laser surgery that keeps your natural voice. Dr. Parin Patel offers the full spectrum of voice-preserving and, when necessary, total laryngectomy with voice restoration.

What is voice box cancer?
The voice box, medically the larynx, sits at the top of the windpipe. It contains the two vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound, and it closes during swallowing to keep food out of the lungs. Voice box cancer is the everyday name for laryngeal cancer, a squamous cell carcinoma of the lining of the larynx and a common form of throat cancer in India.
The great majority of voice box cancers begin on the vocal cords themselves. Because even a tiny growth on a cord changes the voice, these cancers are usually noticed while they are still very small, and a small vocal cord cancer is among the most curable of all cancers. Tumours that start above or below the cords are quieter and tend to be found later.
Symptoms of voice box cancer
- Hoarseness, a rough or breathy voice, or voice fatigue that does not improve
- A persistent sore throat or the sensation of a lump in the throat
- Pain when swallowing, or pain in one ear
- A persistent dry cough, or coughing up blood
- Noisy or laboured breathing, especially when lying flat or on exertion
- A lump in the neck
- Weight loss and difficulty swallowing in more advanced disease
Who is at risk?
Smoking is responsible for the large majority of voice box cancers, and the risk rises with every year and every cigarette or bidi. Alcohol multiplies the effect of smoking rather than merely adding to it. Long-standing acid reflux that reaches the throat, exposure to industrial dust and fumes, and heavy voice use in the presence of these irritants all contribute. HPV plays a smaller role than in the tonsil. Our guide to lifestyle and risk factors for voice box cancer explains how much risk falls after stopping smoking.
How voice box cancer is diagnosed
- 01
Flexible laryngoscopy
A slim camera passed through the nose in the outpatient clinic shows the vocal cords directly. Dr. Patel assesses the size of any lesion and whether the cord still moves normally.
- 02
Stroboscopy and narrow-band imaging
Special lighting shows the vibration of the cords and the abnormal blood vessel patterns of early cancer, helping to distinguish a tumour from a benign polyp or nodule.
- 03
Biopsy under anaesthesia
A short procedure confirms the diagnosis. For very small lesions, the biopsy and the laser removal can be combined into a single treatment.
- 04
Scans for staging
CT or MRI of the neck shows how deep the tumour extends and whether lymph nodes are involved. A chest CT or PET-CT is added for larger tumours.
Voice box cancer treatment in Ahmedabad
The aim is to cure the cancer with the least possible effect on your voice, breathing and swallowing. Treatment is matched to the stage:
Cancers that have spread to lymph nodes are treated with a neck dissection at the same time, and radiotherapy is added after surgery when the pathology shows high-risk features. Dr. Patel presents every case to the tumour board at HCG Aastha Cancer Centre so that surgical and non-surgical options are weighed together. Life after voice box cancer treatment
After laser surgery the voice is husky for a few weeks and then settles; a course of voice therapy helps it return to its best. After radiotherapy, the throat is sore for several weeks before recovering. After total laryngectomy, patients learn to care for the stoma, protect it from water and dust, and speak with the voice prosthesis, which most master within a few weeks of training. Swallowing returns once the pharynx has healed, and the sense of smell can be retrained with specific techniques.
Our rehabilitation programme brings speech therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics and stoma care together, and our article on life after throat cancer surgery offers practical everyday advice. Stopping smoking permanently is the most important step to prevent a second cancer.
